Good afternoon parents and students!

Welcome to homecoming week! This will be a very busy time of homecoming and band activities. Please make sure you note the Wednesday pep rally that will be occurring downtown on the calendar below! Have a great week!!

Band Booster Meeting
Our next band booster meeting will be this Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. We will be discussing our upcoming Royse City Marching Classic marching contest at great length and would love to have your help with this. This is the first year we are hosting a marching contest in our facility and we hope to make it a yearly fundraiser. We have an outstanding start to our event with 11 bands including us signed up to participate. That event will be on October 14th and will last all day.

Community Pep Rally
Wednesday night, September 20th, we will be traveling to Main Street for the community wide homecoming pep rally. This is a required event for all band students. Students should wear their Paradise Found shirts and jeans/pants. All students will travel to and from the event on school transportation. This event will last approximately 30-40 minutes and we will return to the school after it is over. See schedule below.

Mums and Garters at Homecoming
These may be worn at game time, but must not be worn on the field. I would recommend something that does not pin to the shirt, since the weight of the mum will pull the shirt down. Something around the neck on a ribbon or lanyard has worked well in the past.

Grades
At this point in time, everyone should be very aware of where they stand with grades. We are going into week 5 and there are 2 weeks left to get your grades to passing. Parents, please double check with your students. If they are telling you “I got it mom, or dad” that may be code for “I don’t even want to think about it” Please keep pressing until you all know where your student stands academically. No matter how low the grade is, checking in with that teacher and going to tutoring goes a very long way. Ignoring the problem will not help you be successful. I know the new grading policy has been a rough subject with many. However, just like in life, we have to follow the policies and guidelines in place, whether we agree with them or not. The main thing is that you are learning AND retaining the information you need to be successful. Please let me know if you need some help in a class! I will be happy to advocate for you with your teachers, provided you are willing to do the work to be successful.

Uniform Checkout
We will be continuing check-out on Tuesday during the band classes. Due to the heat forecasted this week, we will spend one more game in summer uniforms and will not wear formal uniforms this week. Shoes and gloves will be here shortly as well. They will be here before we wear our formal uniforms for the first game.

Attendance
We continue to have issues with a few students arriving to rehearsal 5 minutes before we begin or simply missing without any notice. Our rehearsal location is a good distance away from the band hall for the wind players. It always takes some extra time to get horns out, make sure you have everything, and then begin moving to the field. Please arrive early enough to be on the field by the start of rehearsal. As a reminder, please do not schedule drivers license tests, medical appointments, dental appointments, etc. during our "before-school" or "after-school" rehearsals. This is the only time we have to work as a full ensemble. When we learn something new with people out, we have to take additional time to run through it again the next morning. The more time we are all here, the greater the chance for success as we enter contest season next month.

Good afternoon parents and students!

Welcome to week 4! This will be another busy week with grades coming out, our first home game, as well as uniform checkout occurring during the class periods. There are a few announcements below in addition to the schedules. Please take a moment to read through them and let me know f you have questions.

Summer Uniform Hats
Hats continue to be an issue as we have students reporting that their hats have been stolen. However, at the end of the last 2 games, we have at least 4 hats turned in to us with no owner. My recommendation would be to buy a simple luggage lock for your duffle bag zippers and place hats in them when they are not on your head. This way you can be sure that your belongings stay safe. Again, we do not have the ability to lock everything up.

Also, the hats were put into place for this, the hottest time of the year. Stadiums typically run North/ South with the visitors typically facing into the setting sun at game time. Our original goal for a summer uniform was to have matching attire, but also give our students some level of protection from the sun/heat at the hot evening games. This is also why we added the hat. Now, I know what you are thinking…if we are protecting from the sun, why all black? The other option was a gross gold color or white. White can be “see-through” under the stadium lights so that was not much of an option. White hats would also get extremely dirty quickly given how much we sweat in performance. Please make sure you are keeping up with your uniform pieces. When we make the switch to formal uniforms, students will be keeping track of even more uniform items.

“This is not your room”-Parents feel free to skip this one if you want
There is a great movie from the 80’s called Turner and Hooch. In this movie, Tom Hanks essentially inherits this extremely stubborn dog named Hooch. There is this hilarious scene in which Tom Hanks walks the dog around the house, showing him each room and saying, “This is not your room!” Of course the dog does not listen and proceeds to destroy the house. We tend to have something in common with Hooch. We are destroying the band hall by leaving clothes, trash, music, lyres etc. all over the place. If you want to destroy your room at home, that is between you and your parents. You are not extremely stubborn dogs…you have the ability to know whether something should be chewed up, messed up, or cleaned up. Your mother does not work here and even if she is a district employee, she does not get paid to clean up after you. We do hold on to items left behind, but typically not longer than a week. Our facility is very nice and though we struggle to have room for everything, we need to make sure we are keeping it nice by keeping things picked up.

Grades
I wanted to speak to the grade and eligibility situation to hopefully eliminate some confusion. Progress reports go out this week. If a student is failing a class on the progress report, it does NOT impact their eligibility at this point. However, it is time for a “four-alarm fire” approach to getting the grade raised. If student is failing a class once the 6 weeks period has concluded, they become ineligible to participate in extra curricular activities and performances. This includes games and contests. I have found over the years that most teachers are very accommodating if you are showing effort. This means going in for tutoring, retaking tests, asking for help, etc. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP! Asking for help is an indication of intelligence and desire to succeed. Being silent is a clear message of apathy to your teachers. It does not make you look “dumb” to be concerned about your grades.

Uniform Checkout
We will be starting uniform checkout on Tuesday during the band classes. I am sharing this because students may want to dress accordingly. We do not wear jeans or pants underneath the uniform and will also not do that for the purposes of trying them on. It might be a good idea to have summer uniform shorts with you this week so you can make sure your pants fit correctly.

Good evening parents and students,

I hope you all enjoyed your three-day weekend and are ready to get back to it! Our students did a fantastic job at the game on Thursday, and we are looking forward to our second road trip. Special thanks to all of the parents who helped out with equipment and music!! It made our first halftime very easy and very smooth. This week, we are going to the same place at the same time for the game. The only difference is we are playing North Garland instead of South Garland.

We do NOT have morning rehearsal tomorrow and will treat it like a Monday. We do have rehearsal 5:30-8:30 p.m. tomorrow evening. Also, all students need to bring their summer uniform shirt, shorts, no show socks, and tennis shoes to rehearsal tomorrow (hats are optional). We are planning on taking a group photo tomorrow evening at some point. Please be dressed in summer uniforms for the start of the rehearsal. We will rehearse and then take the picture. We will not have time for students to change clothes and then change back, so plan on being in summer uniforms for rehearsal tomorrow night.

We will be learning MVT 3 drill tomorrow during our evening rehearsal so please come prepared and well hydrated. Pass-Offs will also continue tomorrow night. Please make sure you have all of your music, coordinate sheets, pencil, nail apron, water cooler, etc. for tomorrow night’s rehearsal.

Good afternoon parents and students!

We will have our first game and pep rally this week so please pay careful attention to the things we have going on in the schedule. The weather is very much a concern as we look towards Thursday. We will watch that situation very closely and send updates and announcements, as we are able.

Monday Night
We do have Meet the Teacher on Monday, however all band students will need to be in rehearsal during our scheduled time of 5:30 -8:30 p.m. Parents will get a copy of their students’ schedules and have an opportunity to meet all of their teachers. With our first public performance coming up Thursday, as well as the unpredictable weather patterns, we must take this opportunity to transfer the show to the field and off of the concrete.

Summer Uniforms
Summer uniform parts will be passed out this week on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon for all students that ordered them (freshmen and new students). For the game, students will also need "no show” socks and split sole tennis shoes. (Please no Vans, Converse, or other flat sole shoe.). We will wear this summer uniform (dry-fit shirt, shorts, ball cap, “no show” socks, and tennis shoes) for the first few games. Students that do not have the correct items will not be permitted to attend the game. Any hair accessories, must be school colors. We also do not wear jewelry in uniform. All piercing jewelry must be removed. You may use piercing retainers that are clear for those of you that are concerned with the piercing closing up during the ball game. The point of being in uniform is to look the same, to the extent that we can. Please remember, football games are mandatory graded performances, so plan accordingly.

Game Information
It is a good idea to send snacks for the football games. Students may store them in their duffle bags. Band students are not permitted to go to the concession stand during the games. The reason for this is our size. It takes well more than a quarter of play to get through the entire band at a concession stand. Students that chose the meal plan will eat at school before we leave for the game. Students should fill up their water coolers before we leave for the game on Thursday afternoon. We will perform halftime to the home side stands. Since we are the visitor, we will be first to perform. Halftime will generally occur about 60-75 minutes into the game. Students must ride to and from the games on district transportation. Exceptions will only be made in the event of a medical emergency. We will be sending a request for assistance with equipment for halftime very soon as well. Please watch your email for opportunities to help!

Parents and students,

This evening we had a large number of students have to sit out from rehearsal for various reasons. It is very important that students drink water throughout the day each and every day as well as eat meals. We totally understand legitimate illness, but many issues tonight were from students not being prepared for rehearsal and not caring for themselves during the day when they had multiple activities. Please check in with your students on this.

Also, parents should use the drop off and pick up lanes by the band hall as designed. We are all in a hurry to get home, but student safety must be everyone's concern. Please remain in the lane you select all the way through the the pick-up loop. If you are picking up or dropping off your student at the band hall, use the lanes as originally designed.

Reminder: Band Hall open at 6:30 a.m. and rehearsal begins at 7:00 a.m. See you all tomorrow!

Thank you!

Doug Fulwood

Good afternoon parents and students!

I hope you are enjoying your last day of summer and are ready to begin the year! Below you will find this week’s schedule. Please pay careful attention to the times as we will begin morning rehearsals and guard/percussion sectionals this week. Students will need to be in dress code by the time they are in their first class, but they may wear athletic clothes to rehearsals in the mornings. We will be done at 8:00 a.m. on those days and they will have about 30 minutes to change and get ready for the day. There is no football game this week so you will not see that in the schedule. As a reminder, all band and booster fees are due tomorrow. Students should turn booster fees into the safe outside of my office. All instrument and percussion fees not paid should be brought to me.

I would ask that everyone try to be as patient as possible during the first day. I know there are many of you still needing to have new schedules printed and some still needing changes. Please try to approach tomorrow as calmly as you can. Anytime there is new software involved in scheduling, there are always issues to work through at first. Also, please remember that the band hall is your home away from home. Should you encounter any problems or issues this year, we are here to help you. Do not think that you are alone in your journey, because you are not. As I said Friday night, we will be your support system as long as you are here. Never be scared to bring any issues you have to the adults that love you and care about you. We all want you to be successful and have a great experience. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you tomorrow!

This Week’s Schedule: (I am waiting to hear from the coaches regarding how we will structure morning rehearsals/practices for freshmen football players. I will communicate that schedule tomorrow before day’s end)

Here is this week's schedule!

Reminders:

  • All band fees are due by Monday August 21st. Please get those into the safe in front of my office door by the end of the first day of school.
  • We will be passing out new dot cards for MVT 1 and 2 on Monday to assist those that were lost or got wet in the activity on Friday.
  • Memory pass-offs begin this week by parts. You will be pulled to pass-off during rehearsal starting tomorrow.
  • We are not rehearsing Wednesday this week.
  • We will run the same football schedule that we did this past week. Football students will go to the scrimmage on Friday and when finished, return to rehearsal if time permits. More on that later this week. The band will not play at scrimmages.
  • Our first Monday night rehearsal will be August 21st, the first day of school. Make arrangements now to make sure you are here for all school week rehearsals. Additional rehearsals that week will be Tuesday through Friday 7:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m. each day. There is no game in Week 1.
  • We will also send information about guard and percussion sectionals before week's end. Both groups will meet for sectionals once a week. These are also required times and will start the first week of school.
